Portimão is the largest city in the western Algarve, and was traditionally a centre for shipbuilding, sardine fishing and fish processing. Today, most of that industry has been replaced by tourism, leisure, and retail, leaving Portimão as a large and residential city. Most tourists visit Portimão either for the extensive shopping or when using public transport, but there is a surprising amount to be seen within the city.
The city’s old and once bustling fishing docks have been responsibly transformed into a scenic promenade, leading to the quaint and tree-lined plazas of the old town. Further inland are pleasant pedestrian shopping streets, a series of historic buildings, and a varied selection of cafes, bars, and restaurants specialising in freshly cooked seafood.
With the Algarve surrounding the city, it’s a great chance to explore some of the best beaches, food and sights Portugal and indeed southern Europe has to offer.
The family friendly tournament is not only focused on football, and is catered to give the players and their families an experience outside of the sport too, so why not combine the tournament with a family holiday in the beautiful region of Algarve?
The nearest international airport is Faro Airport (FAO).
Tournament offers bus reimbursement (up to 10 euros) and will also organise transfers to and from the airport.
It’s also possible to arrive at Lisbon airport and catch a bus with one of the teams heading down to the tournament: these buses will leave on 23 June. A spot can only be guaranteed by contacting us ahead of time – and before booking – and upon confirmation from the tournament.
Otherwise, there is a direct line from Lisbon to Faro by train – and booking ahead means tickets are often available at just 10 euros.
